Increasing Lip Volume and Eliminating Purse-String Wrinkles


Understanding Lip Volume Loss and Purse-String Wrinkles


The lips are formed by a ring-shaped muscle called the orbicularis oris, as shown in Figure 1.

 

With aging, this muscle loses its volume and strength, causing the lips to thin, lose their contour, and decrease in fullness. Additionally, as the muscle volume decreases, the excess skin begins to gather into small, radial folds around the mouth, commonly known as purse-string wrinkles.

The most effective and safe method to enhance lip volume and eliminate these wrinkles is by strengthening and rebuilding the orbicularis oris muscle through targeted exercises.

Technique for Training the Orbicularis Oris Muscle


To properly perform the exercise:

​

  • Tuck your lips inward, lightly pressing them against your teeth.
     

  • While maintaining this lip position, try to purse your lips as if you were pulling them into a tight "tube" shape.
     

  • While executing this motion, press the NuviCor MEWING device against your lips with its metal contacts. Figure 2 highlights the contact area in blue, and Figure 3 shows the correct device position from a side view.
     

This exercise is straightforward and can quickly yield noticeable improvements in lip volume and wrinkle reduction.

Exercise Sequence for Strengthening the Orbicularis Oris

 

Personalized Adjustment: After completing the initial muscle test (Fig. 4), the NuviCor MEWING app will adjust the exercise difficulty based on your muscle strength.

Exercise #1

 

  • Begin by tensing and relaxing your orbicularis oris muscle five times. As you do this, the app will display a blue graph tracking your muscle activity. The goal is to increase your muscle tension so the blue graph rises above the red target line (Fig. 5).
     

  • At first, you might find it challenging to meet the target, but the device will adapt to your capabilities, making the process easier over time.
     

  • After completing the set, take a 20-second break and repeat the exercise several times.The session concludes with a result window where you can save your progress. Afterward, proceed to exercise #2.

Exercise #2

 

  • This exercise requires you to maintain muscle tension while following a visual guide on the screen. The goal is to align your muscle activity with the displayed pattern, keeping the tension line within the designated squares (Fig. 6).
     

  • While it doesn't demand intense muscle force, it requires precise control and coordination.
     

  • As with exercise #1, you will perform several cycles with brief rest periods in between.

Exercise #3
 

  • The final exercise focuses on building muscle endurance, essential for maintaining long-lasting lip volume and smooth skin. Instead of observing a graph, you will watch a movie on your screen (Fig. 7A).
     

  • The movie will pause if your muscle tension drops below the required level (Fig. 7B). To resume the movie, increase your muscle effort slightly.
     

  • Although this exercise isn't physically strenuous, it plays a crucial role in enhancing muscle tone and endurance.You can choose any movie or slideshow to watch during this exercise, with detailed instructions available in the manual.​

By regularly engaging the orbicularis oris, you can improve lip volume, redefine lip contours, and reduce the appearance of purse-string wrinkles.
